Making a solar oven is a fun and eco-friendly science project for the whole family. Not only will it teach kids about renewable energy, but it’s also a great way to spend quality time outdoors while creating something useful.
What You’ll Need:
- A pizza box(or any cardboard box with a lid)
- Aluminum foil
- Plastic wrap
- Black construction paper
- Tape or glue
- Scissors
- Ruler or pencil
- Optional: a thermometer to measure temperature
Step 1: Prepare the Box
Start by laying the pizza box flat. Then cut a flap into its lid. Leave about 1 inch along the edges, cutting on three sides so that the flap can be folded upward.
Step 2: Line the Flap with Aluminum Foil
Next, cover the underside of the flap with aluminum foil. The shiny side should face outward, as this will direct sunlight into the box.
Tape the flap, smoothing out any wrinkles to ensure maximum reflection.
Step 3: Attach the Black Paper
Use black construction paper to line the base of the pizza box. Black is a heat magnet, so it’s the perfect material to collect and retain solar energy. Tape it down securely.
Step 4: Add the Plastic Wrap Window
Cover the flap with clear plastic wrap. This will create a greenhouse effect by trapping heat inside the box. Make sure the plastic wrap is airtight so no heat escapes.
Step 5: Position the Solar Oven
Now that your solar oven is ready, place it in a sunny spot with the flap facing the sun. You can use a piece of cardboard or a stick to prop up the flap at an angle to reflect sunlight into the box.
Step 6: Test It Out
Now comes the fun part—cooking! You can use your solar oven to cook simple treats like s’mores, bake cookies, or heat up some nachos. It might take a little longer than traditional ovens, but the experience is well worth it.
Step 7: Measure the Temperature (Optional)
If you have a thermometer, you can use it to experiment with different angles and times to see how much heat you can trap.
