Mary
Sweeters grew up in Sonoma, California, enjoying the rural environment of
the northern San Francisco Bay Area. Interested in science and concerned
about environmental issues from an early age, Mary attended the University
of California, Santa Cruz, where she received a B.A. in Environmental
Studies/Biology. In fall of her third year she participated in the Sierra
Institute, a University of California extension program, in which she spent
two months backpacking through the Utah wilderness, learning about regional
conservation issues. She took courses ranging from conservation biology to
national environmental policy, striving to understand the science behind the
problems facing the natural world. After graduating in 2004, Mary worked as
an intern at National Environmental Trust, in Washington, D.C. This work
introduced her to the policy side of conservation, which she found
challenging and interesting. In her spare time Mary enjoys nature
photography, biking, and ultimate frisbee. |
