Joie Abner - CSI Fellow

Joie grew up in Anchorage Alaska and has always had a strong passion for the outdoors.   She enjoys biking, hiking, snow shoeing and skiing in Alaska, particularly in the Chugach Mountains.  She developed an interest in the brain and began to study Neurosurgery as a high school student with one of Alaska’s Neurosurgeons.  Her mentorship inspired a desire to become a doctor.  Joie earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology, her second passion, at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA).  Summer of 2005, Joie worked as a research intern in the Montine Lab studying proteonomics, cellular pathways, and enhancing her knowledge of research techniques.  During her undergraduate studies, Joie became interested in Environmental Toxicology of the Arctic.  Having grown up in Alaska,  Joie has a personal interest in the health and well being of her community.  She is working towards her MD/PhD and plans to return to Alaska to practice.  Currently, Joie is working for the State of Alaska within the Division of Public Health and teaches within the Biology department at UAA.
